Giampiero Cantoni: Lombardy guide the recovery

Giampiero Cantoni on Panorama Economy, discusses the role of Milan and Lombardy in the recovery from the crisis.

"The data tell an Italy of the chamber system in which the desire to do business survived the economic and financial crisis. On top of the pyramid is, not surprisingly, Lombardy and Milan. The Region and the cities are taking the head of the crisis and say these are the figures: The numbers of firms active first. 287 000 companies operating in Milan, about 5 million and 300 thousand businesses operating throughout the country - almost similar number to that of last year (- 0.1 per cent). The companies account for Milan 5.4 per cent of all Italian companies.
These data are consistent with the experience of each of us citizens of Milan. Our city over the past two years has seen a great change in business structure. The crisis has shut down businesses, has streamlined the circuits of production. But it has also created new opportunities. take a stroll downtown and count the new windows. It 'a thrilling experience. You see, step by step, how the city is changing, as is evolving in the long march to the Expo. The productive heart of the country wants to revive, following quell'afflato business that is always right.
The data of the chamber system say Lombardy, Veneto, Piedmont and Emilia Romagna did not give up. The flowering of initiatives is in part a reflection of good policy choices. In Lombardy, for example, start-ups are strongly encouraged, as did youth entrepreneurship, with a favorable tax treatment. The path traced by intelligence from Roberto Formigoni was followed, in greater or lesser extent, also by his colleagues. But it is useless to pretend that that is enough, or that the State, the public, to be able payable this "resurgence business."
